About

Established in 2002

My name is Bill Weinel. I started in the technology business at the early age of eleven years old when I became interested in electronics through my hobby of listening to the shortwave radio. My shortwave hobby lead me into a career in commercial broadcasting and engineering.

I started my broadcast career in radio by getting an FCC 3rd Class Commercial License and working part time during high school for the school radio station and later a local commercial radio station. After spending some time in radio, I decided to make a move to television engineering. In 1974, I took and passed my 2nd and 1st Class FCC Commercial License examinations and went to work for Atlantic Telecasting Company in Wilmington NC at WECT television in their engineering department.

My continuing interest in electronics and engineering next lead me into working with computers. I built my first computer as a hobby project in 1975 and learned how to program it. I then pursued a college major in Computer Science at UNC Wilmington. Once finished there, I when to work for Capitol Broadcasting Company in Raleigh at WRAL television in engineering. I later also worked for Unisys Corporation at the US Environmental Protection Agency as a contract employee in their facilities management division. While at Unisys I was responsible for providing technical support for micro to mainframe communications and file exchange.

After my contract position ended, I went back to WRAL where I installed the stations first computer network and became it’s first network manager. I preformed numerous desktop computer installations, provided user support, and completed many networking and engineering projects for the company. I also installed and supported all of the companies digital graphics systems, weather graphics systems, and radar systems prior to my retirement in 2018.

I hold both an FCC Commercial General Class License as well as an Amateur Extra Class License. I have a variety of technical skills that include computer networking, computer programming, circuit design, printed circuit board fabrication, electronics prototyping, electronic construction, amateur radio, vintage radio restoration, and electronic test equipment restoration.

I still enjoy consulting on technical projects on a part-time basis.

If I can assist you with your new or existing technology project, please contact me.
